REGISTER FOR SCULPTURAL WELDING
Class description: the class will be exploring basic cold-fabrication techniques in steel to create small-scale sculptural steel ornaments for the home or garden. Course will include properties of materials, comparison & contrast of different welding techniques, equipment safety, collection of available materials, design, material preparation, design execution, finishing, and display. The instructor will also be offering a broad spectrum of small-scale items from his canon to demonstrate the breadth of possibilities in this exciting medium.

Course syllabus
Day 1:
Possibilities: examples of cold-fabrication from the schork~munsell studios.
Materials properties: how different grades of steel, iron, & welding sticks behave on the bench.
Safety: hazards of the equipment, and how not to become a statistic.
Treasure hunting: picking your materials.
Design: drawings in three dimensions.
Preparation: how to turn your treasures into raw materials.
Now hold still: stabilizing your work-site on the bench.
Ready-set-go: assembling you materials along the pattern of your design.
Day 2:
Review: properties, safety, design-to-execution.
Presentation part 1: cleaning & finishing your sculpture.
Presentation part 2: displaying your sculpture.
Conclusions: critique of technique by instructor, feedback on work-product from classmates.
*a blind survey will be provided for all students to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the course.
Class size: up to 4; age of student: 12 years to adult (parents may audit if they so desire)
Materials: welding helmets, welding gloves; welding sticks; misc. steel scrap; misc. grinding stones and cutting wheels; misc. clamps, vise grips, wire.
